[UPDATE3: apologies to all the kind folks who have posted in the comments to contribute to the list- all comments disappeared when I moved my blog- very sorry (erm…Disqus?). this update is most likely my final update. Prices sure have come down since this post was first published so I’ve updated them accordingly and all links for sticks that pass the test have been updated.
looks like most 16gb sticks average around $25 now. so go grab some
Once again thanks to all those who contributed to the list. /UPDATE]
[UPDATE2: Since this post proves to be quite popular, i’ve decided to expand the list. I could not do this without with the help of the guys over on gamefaqs.com’s boards, so thank them. Meanwhile, if you feel like contributing, just leave a blog comment and I’ll add them asap.]
[UPDATE: my quest has ended with the Sandisk Cruzer Countour 16gb. Although a bit old-a 2007 product I believe and in danger of almost being a Sandisk xbox branded stick, it neverthless has good performance, and is more than 10bucks cheaper. and it probably looks nicer. It’d be interesting to see some benchmarks for the official xbox stick.]
Recently, the Xbox 360 received a most curious dashboard update. It enables the use of USB mass storage devices (flash drives, usb hard disks etc) as an extension to the internal hard disk. The catch is that, and understandably so knowing how MSFT sees us consumers as money trees, well the catch is that you’re limited to using only 16Gb no matter what you plug into the console. Fine. If you wanted more storage you buy their overpriced drive upgrades and so on.
But no this was not enough for you see, they also sell xbox branded Sandisk flash drives here. That’s 70 bucks for a 16GB stick [UPDATE-23/08 now $29.99]. And for just twice that@ 150USD, you can get a larger capacity hdd upgrade. I’ve read many positive reports of people sticking in random usb sticks and having success EVEN when the performance was not up to par, at which point they get this below warning:
And so i thought, great I’ll do myself a favour and get a fast usb stick to load games with. And so I did some research, bought a new 16gb stick and here is the result:
Your device failed the frigging data loss test and can’t be configured, please go buy our xbox branded stick. Some people have had some sucess after formatting the stick on Windows first. I tried that- no dice. I tried formatting it (as a MSDOS filesystem) on a mac- that didnt help either. Tried plugging it into the back port instead- wishful thinking. Tried my other 16gb stick also but that was useless.
Here's the list. It’s small and even though I’m on a personal quest to find one that’s going to work I don’t have the resources to try that many…so if anyone would like to help please leave me a comment with name of device and status: pass, slow, fail. This is so that others might be able to consider this list before buying a new stick just for their xbox and end up wasting $.
The list:
What I knew as fact: the A-Data Xupreme boasts a fast read speed. But, it has a slow write speed. And indeed I let HD Tune test it and it was performing quite consistently at (read speed) 31MB/s maximum and around 28MB/s minimum. And the PQI was relatively inconsistent but nevertheless managed a maximum of 30MB/s and a minimum of around 27MB/s.
So it would seem that my mistake was in not paying attention to the stick’s READ speed. And it may seem that the xbox requires the drive to have a minimum read speed before it’d allow it to pass the data loss test. This is just a guess though, if anyone knows better please comment. Meanwhile, i think I’m going to return the A-Data if I could and try a different brand. What I won’t do, is buy the Sandisk xbox branded stick for 70 dollars (it’s now 26 bucks on amazon).

usb stick allowed capacity has been raised to 32gb!
ReplyDeletehttp://kotaku.com/5959364/xbox-360-supports-32gb-usb-drives-after-latest-update
Thanks for the info. My 8GB Imation model SBH10230002559 Failed entirely. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHp USB disks don't work either.... Not the 4GB, not the 16GB niether the 32GB. I just wasted $80
ReplyDeleteThat is absurd. HP usb flash drives are the ONLY brand I use because every other brand has always failed. Every HP flash drive I have ever used has always passed with flying colors. I avoid all other brands, and ONLY use HP. Something must be wrong with your console.
Deletesorry to hear. I hope the list helps. personally I'm usnig the Sandisk Cruzer Contour and it's fine. it's not cheap at around 50 bucks on amazon (Jan 2012). the official xbox stick has come down from 70 to 30 bucks http://amzn.to/xb0wDZ so if you don't want to take any chances with the user-contributed but unverified list above, go for it.
ReplyDeletethank you for sharing. i'm sure this will be useful for people who still need to come here
ReplyDeleteappreciate it :)
ReplyDeleteI recently came accross your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I dont know what to say except that i enjoyed reading it. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
ReplyDeleteSomeone found a solution that works for most drives with the data loss test failure problem
ReplyDeletehttp://www.pwnem.com/t-xbox-360-usb-storage-info-and-data-loss-error-fix
you're right. al those seemingly fast expensive ones fail. 'best' however is probably based on just one set of figures...say 'Read speed' rather than a combination or the general performance of the stick as a whole.
ReplyDeleteChewi, yes you get get away from paying for an expensive Xbox-branded one but you may not be able to get away from a Sandisk-made one.
By all means though, refer to the list. I can't guarantee that it's 100% accurate, as with all user-generated content, but I'd like to believe that all the contributors are genuine. Plus I dont see anyone gaining anything by giving false info.
Good luck.
...as a fail, that is.
ReplyDeleteAdd the 16gb version of the iamaKey to the list next to it's little brother.
ReplyDeleteHeh, I feel gay when I post this...
ReplyDeleteI have tested a 8GB Tsingston DartarTraveller and it works fine with no problems, even homosexually.
Tho the 1.0GB SanDisk Cruzer Micro (how's my.. hehehehhe) works but with a warning. Now that's really ultra a la homo.
If anyone is interested in toe-sucking service for free for $700 per hour, please do feel welcome to contact me on nennyli@nennyli.com heh~
I was a Corsair Flash Voyager 8GB partioned 1 GB of memory for the Xbox, and it worked fine. That is until now! I decided we needed more space so I moved all my files on the Xbox, Xbox HD. Then the stick is formatted in Windows. Then he tried to set all the space for the Xbox. FAILED tests of data loss
ReplyDeleteKamagra

PNY Attaché 4GB passed just fine... I used it for about 8 hours without doing anything to it besides setting it up on my new 360 slim and then when I was done for the night i moved a couple of things on to it and shut down my xbox.
ReplyDeleteThe next day when I turned on the 360 it did not recognize the device and simply had the option to set it up for 360 use again... I lost all my data I do not recommend PNY sticks
Heh, it's ok, posting my comments just simply turn me on, thank you soooo much!! Yellow chillies are my favourite!!! :D
ReplyDeleteOkok... good memorehs eh? I won't post any more of my advertisements here then :( Though I hope you won't mind me asking this...
Can anyone here volunteer on how to post comments please?
ReplyDeleteI currently use a:
ReplyDeleteKingston
8GB DataTraveler 100 Generation2 2.0 USB Flash Drive DT100G2/8GBZ with absolutely no problems and no warnings. Also, thanks for making this list. I'm currently helping a friend find a compatible drive and lists like this one make it tons easier.
According to the process of this xbox 360 stick it is very essential one for all video game systems to play video games.
ReplyDeletethank you, RuisuOne. will add that to the list
ReplyDeleteThanks Addison ill add that
ReplyDeleteLifetime Memory Product: 16GB = FAIL
ReplyDeleteNewegg brand 1GB = Success
Unbranded ATMMD4GFTGR1 4GB = Success
crap, meant to post that "unbranded" one, has those number printed right on the drive, and i have three of them, each look totally different, but have that same number printed along with black letters that just say 4GB. they are "green drives" and are made from recycled plastic
ReplyDeleteCORSAIR flash voyager 16gb FAIL
ReplyDeleteThis is hilarious because I got the drive based on reviews that stated great reliability and moderate speed as well as a tough exterior. F U MS.
I nearly bought that for my x360 because of its good reviews but didn't in the end because the place I went to doesnt have it.
ReplyDeletehmm yes they are known to perform well...interesting.
anyway thanks digi DUDE, have added this.
4gb Maxell , The small one for netbooks,(works with all usb ports) , doesnt configure , add it plz
ReplyDeletejust wanted to say your blog rawks and you are supercrazyawesome for keeping up with this compatibility list. Good show ol bean
ReplyDeleteCorsair Flash Voyager 8gb FAIL
ReplyDeleteCorsair Flash Voyager 4gb Pass, with warning
So I guess it's better to have a smaller Flash Voyager, since all the bigger ones FAILED? Anyway, great info.
Thanks for he great list!
ReplyDeleteAnyone tried to use the super small Intenso USB Drive 2.0 Micro Line 8GB yet?
Would fit nicely in the front of the Xbox behind the lid covering the USB ports.
Verified that the PNY Attaché 16GB works, no errors.
ReplyDeleteLexar Firefly 16 gb flash drive (red) works with no problems so does the Lexar Jump drive Twist turn (black) 32 gb. Both say "meets system requirements."
ReplyDeletethanks :)
ReplyDeletealready have that on the list too
added, thanks
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if a Kingston DataTraveler 310 USB flash drive - 256 GB would be able to work on an xbox 360?
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone here know?
ReplyDeleteim not able to help you with this one..and google isnt returning any results.
maybe you can ask around in the GameFAQs forums...
thanks everyone. list updated on 3rd Jan, 2011.
ReplyDeletethanks nenny the toesucker
ReplyDeleteill add those
by the way, i'd prefer it if you didn't advertise your...premium services here :)
Easystore 8GB confirmed works but with speed warning. SDUSBES1-008G-G11
ReplyDeleteWondering if supported/passing sticks have AES encryption, similar to how Windows Phone 7 uses the on-chip DRM features of SD cards.
ReplyDeleteIt would be VERY helpful if people included model numbers of the individual sticks. That way people could shop, knowing exactly which drives work and which do not.
ReplyDeleteXbox branded:
8GB = SDCZGXB008GA11
16GB = SDCZGXB016GA11
I suspect it may be similar to the Windows Phone 7 situation, where highly rated (for speed) SD cards fail to work, while slower cards do.
ReplyDeleteSomewhere I read that speed ratings are typically based on large file reads, as would be typical of photos. But in the phone, there are a lot of little files with lots of random access, and it is with that that the superfast cards are not so good at.
Life would be so much easier for all if MS would simply tell us what to look for....
Patriot Xporter XT Boost 16 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive PEF16GUSB $29 at Newegg and Amazon with a $10 mail-in rebate.
ReplyDeleteYou can only format 16GB regardless of the size of the drive. So that would be a waste.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteHP C500W 4GB USB
Kingston DataTraveler 16 GB (Pass with no warning msg)
ReplyDeleteI have the Corsair 4GB Voyager model CMFUSB2.0-4GB and it passed without warning
ReplyDeleteCorsair 4GB Voyager - model CMFUSB2.0 Fail
ReplyDeleteCorsair 4GB Voyager - model CMFUSB2.0 Fail
ReplyDeleteam using 32GB of my Western digital 250GB HDD, runs games fine.
ReplyDeleteLaCie iamaKey 8GB = Failed
ReplyDeletewish i had read this before i bought the ADATA...
ReplyDeleteerm. when i clicked on google it said this is a fix or the fail... wheres the fooking fix my chum? this seems pointless (apart from the list... but im not going to buy one since it said before that any usb can be used even below recomended)
ReplyDeletesorry what fix?
ReplyDeleteI had a Corsair Flash Voyager 8GB partioned with 1GB of xbox memory unit space and it was working fine. That is until tonight! I decided I needed more space so I moved all my xbox files to my xbox HD. Then I reformatted the stick on Windows. Then tried configuring all the space on the Xbox. FAILED data loss test :( wth
ReplyDeletevery strange...
ReplyDeleteyou might want to try formatting it again with different options.. like untick 'quick format' or something
you should also try formatting it with linux/osx before plugging it into the xbox
I haven't seen much said about this but it seems to me that some of the best sticks out there actually fail while some of the worst pass. What's with that? Is the test process flawed? Dare I suggest that it's faked to make us buy the official one? I've already had to send one stick back because of a failure. I'm trying to find one that works but I want to use it for other stuff so I need it to be fast.
ReplyDelete8 GB Cruzer SDCZ36008GA11 works.
ReplyDeleteI assume SDCZ36008GAW11 also works, but have not tested. (Only sold at Walmart, note the extra W)
Yup, same thing happened to me. I picked a couple up when they were on sale, one for xbox and one for my pc, and both failed the data test on the xbox. I tried RMAing them, and have tried one of the two again and it failed. These are with the blue LED, apparently they are junk, or MS are being a-holes with what they pass and fail. I seem to get good read speeds off it in windows, so not sure what the deal is with the 360 and these sticks.
ReplyDeleteSuper Talent 16 gig passes. Bought 2. Both have failed (one a month ago, and one today) and lost all profile and save games. Both now show up as requiring MS initialization. Hidden xbox files are copyable. Most likely MS randomly dumping non MS USB sticks. Anyone else seen similar data loss?
ReplyDeletewow that's not good..
ReplyDeleteare you plugging and unplugging them alot? e.g. sharing the stick with your xbox and pc?
Super Talent 8GB Pico_C = pass. Works great :)
ReplyDeletecool thank you. it's nice and compact too...
ReplyDeletePico Mini 16GB : FAIL there went $40...
ReplyDeleteHi, yellowchilli
ReplyDeleteBoth sticks were used on just xboxs; but were moved between then occasionally.. One was my son's (1st one to die) and the other was mine
note: the USB drives didn't feel snug and there was a wired controller plugged in beside both sticks. I took care of mine.. But who knows with kids.
One of the sticks (mine) is exhibiting physical damage (you've got to tilt the stick to one side to get it recognizable.. Basically junk now.
I'm pretty sure that I was gentle with it (I've got like 50+ USB Memory sticks ranging from 32 meg to 16 gig which I've been using for years without any loss ever.. (most likely doomed my self with that statement :-)...
The other one re-formatted fine (my sons) in a pc and I'm using it for non critial PC to PC file transfers without any issues since I posted
so.. very strange that 2 identical USB sticks die over 2 months within a month of each over when used in two 360s..
I'm thinking a USB extension cable run from the back (or maybe try a self powered usb hub and plug the stick into it)
But for the moment, been using a 2 gig verbrium, with 1 gig allocated to PC.. Copying the hidden files off the stick every week or so to a dated directory on my PC (tested that if you copied the hidden files back, it'll work as a recovery point)
M$ are morons for not providing some sort of official backup functionality, and the xbox file managment sucks almost as bad as their Digital rights managment (Must of used the Windows ME Development B team as the A team must of been on vacation)
added, thank you
ReplyDeleteMicroCenter 4GB = EpicFAIL!!! - $7.99
ReplyDeleteI wish I would've seen this blog before I flushed the money down the toilet, now I have another jump drive I can lose. :-D
added to the list thanks
ReplyDeletemaybe you pc will accept it for readyboost :)
I picked up a SanDisk Cruzer 16gb from Bestbuy (on sale this week for $40 instead of $60). It passed, but has the warning message about not meeting requirements.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.bestbuy.com/site/SanDisk+-+Cruzer+16GB+USB+2.0+Flash+Drive/9226875.p?id=1218062423830&skuId=9226875&st=sandisk%2016gb&cp=1&lp=4
So I returned it and just got an official SanDisk Xbox 16gb. Which comes pre-setup, but just to test I removed the partition and re-added it. Passed.
interesting...thanks fro letting us know. i'm going to have to update my list..
ReplyDeleteby the way did you try formatting it and then putting it back in?
I had not tried formatting it in a computer; best buy was closing in less than an hour and I wanted to just get something up and running that night. Since it was all gift card funny money, the $30 buck difference didn't impact me too much. Also, I like the small form factor of the official drive vs. the larger cruzer with the weird "expand" slide. I hate that there is a cap that can be lost on the official, but the sliding design on the cruzer is just odd to use at any angle other than straight on.
ReplyDeletealrighty thanks.
ReplyDeleteive now marked the Cruzer 16GB as Pass but with warning.
PNY Micro Attache 4GB = Fail.
ReplyDeleteadded, thanks Nox
ReplyDeleteIm going to test out the Kingston for myself and see if it works, hope it works :)
ReplyDelete<3 it worked. thanks man
ReplyDeleteglad it worked out for you :)
ReplyDeletePNY attache 8gb is a no go...i wonder how the 16gb worked but the 8gb wont
ReplyDeletei have a kingston 4 gb but it didnt work (my xbox doesn't even read it!!) but according to ur list its supposed to work...anybody know what the problem is???
ReplyDeleteThe Kingston 8GB works perfectly fine as well. It didn't give me a warning either.
ReplyDeleteis it formatted as FAT32? careful as this destroys data.
ReplyDeleteyour xbox should at least see it even if it's not compatible...
thanks, has it got a specific model name/number?
ReplyDeleteOCZ Rally 2 16GB = Fail
ReplyDeleteI have heard that these work well on XBOX. I was doing some reasearch before buying a 16GB stick. There appears to be at least two different lots of these sticks. The evidence is anecdotal at best though. Some have blue LED and others have Orange LED. It 'appears' that the Organge LED versions pass while the Blue LED versions do not. I received a Blue LED and it failed the data loss test. Which I guess is XBOX speak for not fast enough. I did some testing and found that this drive does sustained 20MB read and write speads. Pretty decent for a flash drive. Guess it is still not fast enough.I also did error checking to see if there was any bad areas on the memory stick and it tested clean. Also tried re-formatting with no luck.
that's interesting to know Steveo thank you.
ReplyDeleteadded to list
ReplyDeleteSanDisk Cruzer Edge 8GB USB Flash Drive
This drive is compatible with the Xbox 360. Plug it in, have xbox 360 auto configure, and off it is.....ready for storage duty!
No messages indicating performance issues, or rejection.
Not the best made flash drive, but it gets the job done.
glad to hear, and thank you for dropping by. i'll be sure to add that to the list too
ReplyDeleteSandisk Cruzer Blade 4GB (SDCZ50C -004G-B35W) =
ReplyDeleteworks but with warning
thanks Aaron it's been added.
ReplyDeletethanks ugzz
ReplyDeleteadded
test
ReplyDeleteappreciate it ugzz. hope this is helping people out there.
ReplyDeleteand couldn't have done it without the contributors.
I have the Lexar Firefly 8GB and it has to reconfigure every time I start up the 360 (i.e. doesn't work) Interesting to see, thought, that the Lexar Firefly 16GB does work.
ReplyDeletehmm thanks for the info but I can't seem to locate that model. got any more details?
ReplyDeleteJust thought I could add... Both the Sandisk Cruzer Glide 16GB and the Sandisk Cruzer 4Gb works perfectly fine now for about a Year.
ReplyDeleteI just bought the shitty PNY 16Gb Attach. It won't Configure, Customize and I lost my demos on it. Luckily it was on sale for $10 =)
hey thanks :)
ReplyDeleteis that PNY Attache 1st gen or 2nd gen? perhaps a model number so I can help identify
